Northwood Elementary has a tradition of striving for academic excellence. We celebrate all cultures and languages. The school population consists of students and staff with rich cultural and ethnically diverse backgrounds. The strength and quality of our programs are a reflection of our highly committed staff. We are dedicated to ensuring that Northwood Elementary is a welcoming, stimulating environment where students are actively involved in learning academics as well as positive values. Through our hard work, together, our students will be challenged academically to reach their maximum potential. We are committed to providing the best educational program possible for our students. Specifically, our school offers: A full-time counselor who runs counseling groups and does social-emotional lessons in each classroom twice per month; A full-time Student Support teacher who supports students in many ways, primarily in literacy intervention as needed; A full-time Student Support Teacher-English Learner and full-time bilingual Para to support English proficiencies; 1:1 technology devices in all classrooms; Before and after-school programs provided by Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center; Several family nights throughout the year.
Excellence in Education
- Staff development and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are focused on the implementation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) student achievement
- Data is continually analyzed in order to maximize instruction and increase rates of student proficiency on assessments
- Staff work closely with all support staff and site administration in order to refine instructional practices
- We have a strong focus on early literacy for grades TK-3; this focus is also supported by a block grant
Enrichment Programs
- Before and after-school program
- Intervention groups with the Student Support teachers
- Social skill development with the counselor and teachers
- Saturday School to improve attendance and academics
- Additional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), physical education, and Art programming during lunch
- 6th grade science camp
