Las Palmas Elementary
2026-2027
School Fact Sheet
To inspire each student to extraordinary achievement every day.Excellence in Education
Las Palmas Elementary has high expectations for all students. There is a high level of parental involvement and support. As one of the higher-performing schools in the Twin Rivers Unified School District, our school takes pride in developing the potential of all students. Las Palmas Elementary is one of two sites that host the Dual Immersion Program in Twin Rivers. The Dual Immersion Program is centered on promoting academic success by using language in a meaningful way. Students will access authentic texts and content in various ways including books, websites, software and video conferences. By the end of the program, students will develop strong academic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in both Spanish and English. We also put an emphasis on the use of technology to advance critical thinking and explore personal interests. Each student is provided with a personal device to support the development of their digital literacy and technology skills.
Notable Accomplishments
Las Palmas operates as a community school. By definition, it is both a place for and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus is on academics, health and social services, youth and community development. We believe community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities. We received a Community Schools for Excellence award from the Institute for School Leadership in Washington, D.C. in 2013 (as Harmon Johnson), one of only three in the nation. One of the reasons was the fact that we made the greatest academic gains in the Twin Rivers Unified School District over the previous three years. In 2016 Las Palmas was designated a Gold Ribbon School. The award was given out to only eight schools within Twin Rivers. The Gold Ribbon Awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. Las Palmas also has a partnership with The Dominguez Dream, a non-profit organization supporting the advancements of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) and enrichment activities.
Enrichments Programs
Las Palmas offers many opportunities for student engagement. Our Dual Immersion program serves the south end of TRUSD and has finally grown into 8th grade at Martin Luther King Jr. Technology Academy. It is a thriving program created to promote bilingualism to reach 21st-century skill goals. Programs such as Student Climate Committee and Student Leadership allow students to be involved, take pride in and build a positive school, community and peer relationships. We are planning to expand the types of after-school arts we offer to create a richer experience for all students. We will also be expanding our Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math (STEAM) program, along with our wildly popular soccer clubs, basketball, track and field, cheer, and other sports programs.
