September 2025 - Healthy Habits, Healthy Minds

Healthy Habits, Healthy Minds: Smart Snacking for Students

This September, Koda is trading in his dog treats for something a little more nutritious—at least in spirit! As students settle into the school year, it’s the perfect time to talk about one of the most important (and often overlooked) parts of student success: healthy eating.

What students eat during the day has a direct impact on how they feel and how well they learn. Nutritious meals and snacks fuel the brain, help regulate mood, and improve concentration and memory. On the flip side, skipping meals or eating lots of processed sugar can lead to energy crashes, irritability, and reduced focus in class.

At Twin Rivers, we encourage families and students to prioritize smart snack choices—especially during the school day. Some great options include:
  • Apple slices with peanut butter (protein + fiber)
  • Carrot sticks and hummus (crunchy and satisfying)
  • Yogurt with fruit (calcium and natural sugar)
  • Trail mix or whole grain granola bars (energy-packed)

These kinds of snacks are easy to pack and give students long-lasting energy without the sugar crash. And don’t forget hydration! Water is essential for maintaining energy and brain function. Encourage kids to bring a refillable water bottle to school each day.

Families can model healthy eating at home by involving kids in meal prep, making balanced lunches, and talking about how different foods fuel our bodies. At school, we’re proud to offer nutritious options through our meal programs—and yes, Koda is always nearby, hoping someone drops a grape (don’t worry, we make sure he sticks to dog-safe snacks only!).

Healthy habits start young, and they last a lifetime. Let’s fuel our future—one smart snack at a time.

August 2025 - Every Day Matters

Every Day Matters: Why Attendance Is the Foundation for Student Success

The school year is off to a fresh start, and with it comes an important reminder from Koda and the TRUSD team: attendance matters. Every single day a student is in school builds the foundation for their academic achievement, personal growth, and social development.

It’s not just about showing up—it’s about being present, engaged, and ready to learn. Research shows that students who miss just two days of school per month (that’s 18 days a year) are significantly more likely to fall behind academically. Chronic absenteeism can impact reading levels, math performance, and even a student’s ability to graduate on time.

Koda, who regularly visits schools across the district, sees firsthand how consistent attendance builds strong school communities. When students are present, they feel connected. They build friendships, participate in class discussions, join clubs and activities, and form relationships with trusted adults. These connections create a sense of belonging that supports mental health and school success.

Families play a vital role in supporting strong attendance. Here are a few tips to help:
  • Establish consistent routines: Early bedtimes and morning checklists make for smoother mornings.
  • Schedule appointments wisely: Try to arrange medical or dental visits outside of school hours.
  • Communicate with your school: If your child is struggling with health, anxiety, or transportation, reach out—support is available.
Let’s work together to ensure every student in TRUSD has the opportunity to thrive. Show up, stay engaged, and remember: every day counts—because YOU count.

July 2025 - Career Spotlight: K-9 Officers – A Day in the Life with Koda

At Twin Rivers Unified School District, student safety is more than a goal—it’s a commitment. And leading the charge is one of our most dedicated officers: Koda, our trained K-9 team member. Working alongside Officer Price, Koda helps keep our campuses safe, secure, and welcoming for all students and staff. But Koda isn’t just a friendly face on campus—he’s also a skilled professional with a critical job.

Becoming a K-9 officer starts with intensive training. Before joining the TRUSD Police Department, Koda completed a rigorous certification program focused on obedience, scent detection, and situational response. This training equips him to locate potentially dangerous or prohibited items, assist during safety drills, and respond calmly and professionally during high-stress situations.

But what truly sets Koda apart is how he builds trust with students. His friendly demeanor, calm presence, and wagging tail make him a unique bridge between law enforcement and our school communities. He’s a reminder that safety and compassion go hand in paw.

Interested in a career working with K-9s? It starts with a love of animals, a strong sense of discipline, and a passion for public service. Police K-9 handlers often have years of experience in law enforcement and go through additional training to build an unbreakable bond with their four-legged partners. It’s a career that demands commitment—but also delivers deep rewards.

Whether you're a student exploring career options or simply a fan of Koda, one thing is clear: K-9 officers play an essential role in protecting our schools while promoting respect, empathy, and community trust.

June 2025 - Stay Safe This Summer, TRUSD!

Stay Safe This Summer, TRUSD!

Hi friends—it’s me, Koda, your favorite four-legged officer!

School’s out, the sun is shining, and summer fun is just around the corner. Whether you’re heading to the pool, hanging out at the park, or just chilling at home, I’ve got some important tips to help you stay safe while having a blast.

Water Safety is Cool!
If you're swimming this summer, always make sure an adult is nearby. Even strong swimmers need supervision, and it’s best to stay in designated swim areas. If you’re near deep water or on a boat, wearing a life jacket is a smart move. And remember—no running near pools! Slippery surfaces can lead to accidents, and no one wants that.

Be Bright and Bike Right
When you’re out riding your bike or scooter, don’t forget your helmet—it’s one of the best ways to protect your head. Stick to bike paths or sidewalks when possible and always look both ways before crossing the street. Wearing bright clothing helps drivers see you, so choose your gear with safety in mind.

Beat the Heat
As temperatures rise, staying cool and hydrated is key. Drink lots of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty yet. Sunscreen is your best friend on sunny days (and even cloudy ones!), and it’s a good idea to take breaks in the shade if you start to feel overheated. I’ve got fur to protect me—but you might need an extra layer of SPF! And if you have a four-legged friend, be sure to check the pavement temps before going out. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for our paws!

Stay Safe Online, Too
Even though school’s out, cyber safety is still in session. Be careful online and never share personal information like your address, school, or location. Always be respectful and kind when posting, and if something online makes you uncomfortable, talk to a parent, teacher, or trusted adult. The internet can be awesome, but it's important to think before you click.

Stranger Danger 101
And finally, a quick reminder about stranger safety: Never go anywhere with someone you don’t know, even if they say they know your family. If someone makes you feel unsafe, say “no,” get away quickly, and tell an adult immediately. It’s also a good idea to have a plan with your family in case you get separated in public.

So whether you're adventuring outdoors, relaxing with friends, or just enjoying some downtime, I want you to stay safe, stay smart, and take care of one another. And don’t forget—if you see me on campus next year, come say hi! I’ll be the one with the wagging tail and nose for safety.

Stay pawsitive,

Koda
TRUSD K-9 Officer, Safety Sidekick, and Friend to All

May 2025 - Big Feelings? You’re Not Alone!

Big Feelings? You’re Not Alone!

Hi friends, it’s your buddy Koda here!

You might see me walking the halls with Officer Price, checking classrooms, and keeping your school safe—but did you know that even a tough K-9 like me feels all kinds of emotions?

That’s right! Sometimes I’m super happy (especially during treat time), sometimes I’m playful and silly, and yep—there are even moments when I feel a little… ruff. 😅

Big Feelings Are Totally Normal
We all go through days when things feel a little heavy or confusing. Maybe you’re worried about a test, feeling left out, or just not sure why you feel the way you do. That’s okay.

Every feeling you have is valid. And every one of them matters.
Whether it’s excitement, sadness, frustration, or joy, your feelings are part of what make you you—and talking about them can help you feel a whole lot better.

Talk It Out—That’s True Strength!
When you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t keep it bottled up. Reach out to someone you trust:
  • A parent or caregiver
  • A teacher or school staff member
  • A school counselor
  • A good friend who listens
Being brave doesn’t mean you never feel sad or scared. Being brave means you face your feelings and ask for support when you need it.

Hello, Twin Rivers Family!

Police dog KodaMy name is Koda, and I’m the official Police Dog (or K-9) of the Twin Rivers Unified School District Police Services Department. It’s my job to help keep our school communities safe and support our amazing students, staff and families. I’m so excited to meet you all on campus and wag my tail at every friendly face I see!

Let me tell you a little more about what I do. As a trained K-9, my sense of smell helps me detect and prevent potential threats, including contraband and other security concerns. I will be around campuses as an extra layer of protection, but also as a reminder that safety is our top priority at Twin Rivers Unified. I love being part of the community - whether it’s visiting classrooms, helping with safety presentations, or just saying hello when I’m out and about!

I’m lucky to work with my amazing partner, Officer Price. We are a team. He’s not just my handler but also my best friend, we both love protecting and serving our school communities.

But Koda’s Corner isn’t just about me - it’s about all of us working together to stay safe and healthy. That’s why I’ll be sharing blog posts and articles every month on topics like safety tips, mental and physical health, kindness, anti-bullying, cyber safety and so much more. You can read all about it here on my Koda’s Blog webpage.

If you’d like me to sniff out safety or bring a little fun to your school, you can reach out to my friends at the Twin Rivers Police Services Department. Email us at police.k9@trusd.net or call 916.566.2777. I can’t wait to visit you soon!
